Web Hosting Control Panel Options

A web hosting control panel can make or break your web hosting experience. Of course, every web hosting has their own control panel preferences, and you may be subject to their preferences when you sign up with them. If you arent entirely sure what a control panel is, it is software that is installed to the web hosts server to help you control your web hosting features and the experience of your users. The control panel will give you access to the features you want and need such as FTP accounts, email accounts, sub-domains, databases that you can create or add, as well as the ability to manage files and such. The control panel is an important part of your dedicated server process and in creating the best website possible.

Knowing which control panel is best for you is all about what you expect, what is advertised, and what you want to achieve. There are different control panels depending on the platform that the host uses such as Windows, Unix, or Linux and each platform may or may not work for you, sometimes you have to experience all of them before you settle on the one that is best for you. Youll find control panels such as Hostopia, Cpanel, Plesk, Sphera, Vdeck, and Ensim, which are all good brands. If you are new to dedicated servers and control panels youll want to choose one of the names that is more intuitive so that it is easier to use. If you are more experienced, you can choose one of the more functional control panels that work great on your platform but are not as easy for the novice to use. Vdeck is one of the most popular and easy to use, but many of the hosts cannot provide access. Ensim is easy to use but is most often used by those that have a bit more experience, but Plesk is an all around great control panel.

The best way to choose the best control panel for your dedicated server is to check out the control panel demos that are often offered through the hosts. Checking out several different platforms and their offered control panels is an experience, and through this research youll likely find the control panel that will work best for you and your needs. Remember that every software takes some getting used to, so everything may not come easily, but choose the one that offers some of the best features and the usability that matches best with your ability. Matching your needs, your abilities, and the features of a control panel is the best way to find the perfect control panel for you.

Linux Web Hosting

Linux is a complete operating system that is similar but not identical to Unix. It runs on a wide variety of hardware, ranging from Intel and AMD CPUs to more exotic hardware such as Digital Alpha computers, PowerPCs, and Silicon Graphics workstations. Probably the most unique characteristic of Linux is that it is freely distributable. Freely distributable means that the source code for the kernel and most software cannot be withheld. It does not mean that companies cannot charge for it. By means of comparison, hosting a website on Unix or Linux is nearly identical.

There are many options available when it comes to writing CGI scripts on a Linux machine. The most common at the time of this writing are PHP and PERL. There are many introductions, tutorials, and even sample scripts available on the Internet when it comes to PHP and PERL.

Database types available for Linux, depends mostly on the web hosting provider you select to host your website. There are many flavors of databases that run on Linux, but the most prevalent among web host providers are mSQL, MySQL., and PostgreSQL. These databases are all relational in nature, and allow highly optimized communication with your website for quick retrieval of information.

If you plan to host the site yourself, and you own the web servers or the software on them, then Linux (or Unix) would definitely be a less expensive option. If you plan to sign up with a web hosting company, and they own the servers and the software installed on them, you will find that there are excellent hosting options available for each platform at very comparable prices.

Switching Web Host

Moving a web site to a new host is not as difficult as you may think. If you follow the tips below carefully you should be fine and have your site up in no time at all.

First Off:

Do not get over excited when you see an extremely cheap hosting plan, look carefully at what the plan they provide and always read the terms and conditions for tricks or hidden fees. Define your own requirements before hand and look for a hosting plan that match closest to your soon to be old web host. A 24/7 support with phone support is a must! Try to find a host that uses the same operating system as your existing host. Get a web host that has a fast Internet connection and has fast servers and good up time (95.3, 99.0, etc)

Scripts:

Make sure if you use php, CGI, Perl or ASP that your new web host supports it. On php make sure they support all the php functions you need and make sure they have all the Perl Modules that you need to use or plan on using. Many scripts need Mysql, so check to see if they support that as well.

Backup:

Backup should be done regularly and not during any major change like moving your site. Make sure you backup everything on your site or you risk losing it all! Save all of your site's files on a disc or you could signup for a data storage service and they will save it for you.

Testing:

You need to be sure that your site is functioning before you cut off from the current host. It's always a good idea to get someone else to test out the new site, if you have more than one computer than use both computers and have a friend to take a look at it too, if you can get more than one person to test it do it. I would also suggest that you test everything from links to images three or four times to make sure things are fine.

Once all this is done you can switch your web hosting and go live. For the next 48 hours check your site often as you can because you never know what may brake or happen. If you do all the above you should be fine and good to go live!

Build A Website - 5 Factors To Consider

I have seen and heard crazy things...ah! But how to build a website! In my endeavor and quest for success I have heard people ask weird questions and I have seen those professing to be internet gurus give astounding answers.

I know of a fellow who posted a question on yahoo answers. This particular question kept me staring at my monitor screen lost of words. This fellow had bought a domain name and registered it with one of the leading domain name registrar. His question was simple yet to those familiar with the art of online business, the question leaves a lot to be desired.

My friend was seeking advice on what to do with his domain name. He had no plans or ideas on what to do with it! Think of lack of planning and we don' t need to go further than this example.

To avoid being on the same predicament, here are 5 factors to consider as you ponder on your next move. Before you build a website, think about the following:

Type of web site.

Identify the type of web site you will be building. Are you going to build a website whose primary purpose is to sell hard good or e-goods? Would your site be composed of affiliate links or are you going to sell your own service or product? Is your web site going to be primarily informative in nature with google ad sense and other form of advertisement or is it going to be purely visual with little or no content.

Identifying the type of web site you are going to create will make the next step easy to identify.

Niche based.

Gone are the days when all a web master needed to do was to stuff their web site with links leading to all type of product and services. In the current internet world you can not succeed in building a web site designed in the form of a shopping mall with all kinds of goods and services.

The internet is increasingly and exponentially becoming a specialized super highway. Only those web sites that are able to distinguish them selves as authorities in a given area are poised to reap the benefits of online business.

Start out by identifying a profitable niche that you will enjoy writing about, identify an area that you already have experience on, have passion or will be comfortable learning about.

Only build a website in an area or niche that you believe in.

Research you market.

It's not just enough to develop and build a website based on your strength and weakness. Care should be taken to do a little bit more research about the potential and profitability of that given field.

There are great tools out there on the net that would enable you to come up with a profitable niche, those tools will also enhance your research by shading light as to the exact phrases that your potential visitors would under normal circumstances type into the search engines in their quest for information.

Domain name and hosting.

Care should be taken while choosing the domain name and hosting company for your online business. A search in any of the leading search engines for the phrase "how to choose a domain name" or "web hosting" would return tones of articles that have been written advising us on the do and don' t do as far as choosing a domain name or host provider is concerned.

Quality Content.

Have you ever typed the exact phrase of a given keyword while searching for information on any of the leading search engines only to end up frustrated with the displayed results after trying several times? Search engines and human traffic thirst for information, great quality information.

One sure ways to win the search engines wars and in the process please your targeted customers is to create quality content. A site owner who remains focused and persistent in doing just start will in the long run reap the benefit of having their pages rank up high if not at the top of the search query results.

And there are many more things to consider, but why not start with this 5 first!
