Does Size Really Matter? A Global Domains International Perspective

Global Domains International has grown by appealing to the masses with instant, inexpensive complete web site packages. Their claim to fame is the multitude of .ws domain names still available. But, is an instant, inexpensive complete web site package with a perfect domain name really what you need?

What's In a Domain Name and How Important Are They To You?

A domain name is an web site address and can be used only once. They are usually made up of words or letters so they are easier to remember and can be more relevant to a person or business. Extensions are the codes at the end of a domain name. The extensions signify which country the domain name belongs to, i.e., .ws belongs to Samoa and .us belongs to the United States.

Getting just the right domain name may be important to you if you need recognition for a product, service, event or your own name. In this case, you may want a web site name with a .ws extension, because you may more likely find just the name you're looking for. Dot com and dot net still have some names available, but many of them have been used up after the dot com boom of the late 1990's.

Domain names can also be more important to you if you want a domain name that relates to something you know is being searched for on the Internet and if you want to be found when people are searching for that name or keyword. Some of the larger search engines like MSN and Google still give a higher ranking faster to a web site that has the keyword being searched for - in the web site or domain name address. If a this is important to you, it might be a good idea to find out what is being searched for on the Internet that relates to the domain name you have in mind before you choose one.

A free handy Internet tool that can help you do this can be found at http://inventory.overture.com. Just put a word or phrase related to the domain name you have in mind into the search box window. It will search all the related terms that were searched for last month on the Internet, and tell you how many times they were searched for. This tool can also identify related keywords you can use for your web site title and on your web site pages that will help you achieve higher rankings in the Internet search engines for those keywords, but this is a whole other topic reserved for a later discussion.

Think About How You Want To Use Your Web Site...

What would you do with a web site? Teach? Show and tell? Make money? Build an email list? Have fun? There are so many options on the Internet today, that it could be mind boggling to a newbie. Doing a little research on the Internet before setting a web site up is a very good idea. It will help you become familiar with all the different web site options and features available so you can make a better choice before you get started. Some of the things you'll need to consider before choosing a web site are:

What do you want the web site to accomplish?

Teach? Show and tell? Make money? Build an email list? Have fun?

How many pages will you need - 3, 5, 10 or more pages?

Some web sites limit the number of pages or bandwidth available.

Price per month?

This can vary from usually $3.95 to $100 or more, depending.

Disk space?

How much space is available for your web site words, pictures, reviews, etc.

Bandwidth?

How many times and how many people can access your site during a period.

Down time?

How reliable is the server that your web site is on?

Security?

Protection from hackers? Secure service available for your customers?

Does Size Really Matter?

As you can see, their are many things to consider before setting up a web site, but making the right choices up front can save you loads of time, effort and headache in the long run. If you set up a web site on a server that only allows 5 pages of space, and you find you need more down the road, you would need to move your web site and domain name to a new server, which could be quite involved. It may be easier for you to make a better choice up front if you have all the options available to you ahead of time. A suggestion would be to type into your search box window top 10 hosting or best hosting to get more information to help you make the right choice before setting up a web site.

Bottom line, investigate your options and be prepared. Size really does matter.

Web Hosting FAQ - Part 4

Definition Of PHP ?

The full definition of PHP means Hypertext Preprocessor. It is generally a programming / scripting language used in the creation of dynamic web pages. HTML documents are usually inserted with such programming scripts commonly known as PHP tags.

In all of the computing programming languages, PHP is deem to be one of the easier programming method to learn, and therefore is widely adopted. You simply embed the PHP tags into HTML codes. The PHP scripts are always run or executed by the web server and it's generate dynamic web pages upon demand.

PHP are also powerful enough to do anything a CGI program can do, plus PHP interacts more effectively with a large variety of databases. There are also lots of websites providing PHP scripts free. Online tutorials are also available. Because PHP is so widely used, there are many resources available and continuous improvements being made.

Why Is There A Need For PHP ?

Basically the primary uses for PHP scripts can be divided into three key programming / scripting areas :-

There are basically three main PHP scripting areas.

  • First is server-side programming scripts. This is also the most commonly used area for PHP scripts. However, the usage of such programming script would also means that it's requires PHP web hosting, browser & parser.
  • PHP scripts can also be used without the need of a server or browser and these are commonly known as command line scripts.
  • PHP is also one of the most commonly used programming languages that are used in the creation of various desktop applications which uses graphic interface. PHP is compactable with most of the current major operating systems (OS) including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Unix, etc.
What is ASP?

Similar to PHP, ASP is also a software programming scripts used for the generation of dynamic web pages.

The main difference between PHP & ASP is cost.

In the case of PHP, it is free and comes with regular free update. This also extends to the very extensive supports networks, online tutorials & instructions manuals.

On the other hand, ASP does not come with much free support nor upgrades and are generally more costly. As such, most web hosting providers package usually comes with PHP support.

On the technical front, PHP generally manages better memory capabilities and as such is more efficient and delivers pages more quickly than ASP.

Therefore from a price comparison basis, PHP is completely functional with no additional costs associated whereas ASP requires the purchase of separate licenses for additional functionality.

How To Choose A Suitable Web Hosting Plan?

Very so often I come across complaints and accusations directed towards web hosting providers on their hosting plans that are deceving their customers. How true it is that the provider is trying to be dishonest with its clients? I presume most famous or renowned providers won't do such a trick. After all, providers need the support of customers in order to survive, why would they dig their own graves? Maybe there is misunderstanding that exists in between the clients and providers until clients feel as if they have been cheated in the first place. Therefore, I see a need in writing this simple and straight to the point article on how to really choose a suitable web hosting plan so that no disappoinment or anger exists in the future.

Types of hosting plans:

Shared Hosting

As implied by the word "shared", this type of hosting plan is shared by a lot of hosting accounts in the same server. Usually, it's around 200 domains in one server ( as in Exabytes' case). Problems will arise when one or two black sheeps in the server causes CPU overloading (for customers, you can actually help to reduce CPU overloading. Kindly refer "The gists of being a happy and satisfied customer" in the paragraphs below). First headache, when hosting provider suspends the black sheep's hosting account, they will protest and got angry and then started posting bad review in forums on the respective hosting provider. Second headache, if the hosting provider does not suspend the account that causes CPU system hog, other 199 customers sharing the same server will be angry at hosting provider as well and start to post bad reviews in forums that the hosting providers' speed is slow, regret choosing the provider and so on. Now, it won't look good for the provider, of course, as they need to make a wise decision, either to tackle "headache #1" or " headache # 2".

Hence, whatever decision by the providers will in one way or another offends the customers. Therefore, please take note that shared hosting is meant for website with low traffic, uses less than 1000 emails daily, and will be great if it's for personal, family, small business purposes such as, personal websites, informative blogs, company website or photo gallery.

Semi-Dedicated Server Hosting

This type of hosting plan is almost the same as shared hosting. In fact, having the same concept as shared hosting but 1 level higher than shared hosting. Only key difference is that in one server, we have made it clear that we will host MAX 5 accounts. It's meant to conquer the problems faced by website owners in shared hosting environment. With less accounts in one server, definitely, there will be less problems. It's advisable that website owners especially those who are keen to involve in community portal, forums or medium-sized enterprise to opt for this semi-dedicated server plan. Take a simple analogy here, living in a terrace house is definitely better than living in a flat. Less noise, less congestion. Shared hosting is like a flat and semi-dedicated server is just like a terrace house. Think of it, you need to use lift and wait for your lift everyday.. but with terrace house, just open your main door, you are already out in the car porch.

Virtual Private Server Hosting

Popularly known as VPS, this is a hosting plan considered as 1 step below a dedicated server. It's often used as a test server, or for those who wish to own a dedicated server but could not afford to. It has root access which you cannot find in the above-mentioned semi-dedicated server plan. All in all, it's a great plan for those software developers or small webhosts.

Dedicated Server Hosting

Needs no introduction to this "powerhouse" in web hosting world! Dedicated server is ideal for corporate usage, government, huge community and also web hosting provider like us, Exabytes. Those who are interested in media streaming, corporate portal, high traffic forums need to take serious note in finding more about dedicated server.

The gists of being a happy and satisfied customer:

This paragraph is specially dedicated to the customers on the roles they could play in order to ease themselves in the future. I'm sure they are customers who might think that such roles are to be played by the providers and not them since they have paid the money, of course they deserve to be served well. No doubt customers deserve to be treated extremely well, even better than a king, but sometimes, hosting providers will have to act sternly (and resulting anger from the affected customers) on some of the uncooperative customers to protect the welfare of other customers who happen to be in the "same neighbourhood". Ain't easy to be stucked in the middle of such a situation. Any steps taken will definitely cause dissatisfaction among the affected clients (as aforementioned in the paragraph on "shared hosting"). So, it will be of best or a Win-Win situation if customers can just weigh the pros and cons of the suitable hosting plans they need before purchasing. I'm sure the customer service of any hosting providers will be able to give you an aid on the suitable types of hosting plan that can cater your online storefronts' needs. And for forums or community portal developers, there are just a few side notes I'd like to add here:

1) Avoid using CMS or forums software that will cause high CPU resources. This is because most CMS softwares causes resources hog when building pages or retrieving images from databases. Those queries that are being run might cause CPU overloading in the server and causes frustration particularly to those in shared hosting plan as Max CPU consumption allocated to shared hosting account tend to be lesser. Try searching on the Internet for a more suitable CMS software to reduce such problem.

2) Take note on your code efficiency as well. It's also known that besides queries, those not well-optimized codings will exhaust the server CPU processing power and memory in seconds.

3) Pay attention to the forum members' post and the usage of signatures' size, avatars' size and preferably no animations and no overused plug-ins.

As a conclusion, hope this article can add extra knowledge to you and create a better hosting environment for everyone!

How to Come Up with Website Ideas

In this article, I'm going to tell you how you can come up with your own ideas for web sites, ideas, that, if you can realize them, have good potential for success. I'll also give you a few examples of where it worked so you'll know I'm not pulling your leg.

Despite what you might think, web site ideas are notoriously easy to come up with, and here's the secret:

Start with a web site you already like but is missing one thing you wish it had. Now go build that site!

Easy, huh? Well, the idea part is anyway.....

Here's a few big examples:

The Digg founder was a SlashDot user, but didn't like the fact that only approved editors could submit links. So he built a site where ANYONE could submit links.

This guy had used various match-making web sites and had gotten tired of paying for a membership. So he built PlentyOfFish, a dating site that was totally free. Ta-da!

At the time of it's creation, what CraigsList did was aggregate online classifieds that, at that time, usually charged a fee, and made them free. Ta-Da!

These are just three examples of sites that hit it big by taking an idea that was already firmly entrenched in the landscape and adding or changing one small thing. No doubt there are countless websites out there that started by mimicking the functionality of another site with something simple added. With the way the web is exploding, one of the best ways to leverage this method is to find a site that currently charges what it offers and build a version that does the some thing, only for free.

What are some of your favorite sites? What do you wish they did that they don't? Now... why aren't you building it?
